Big Oil Urges OPEC: Keep Floor Under Oil Prices

October 30, 2017 Tsvetana Paraskova 0

The oil market and analysts already largely expect OPEC to extend the production cut deal beyond March 2018, which many feel would finally rebalance supply and demand.   OPEC’s new tagline is indeed all about restoring oil market stability and sustained stability in the global oil industry—these, OPEC says, are its main policy drivers. While the organization is said to favor extending the deal throughout 2018, and as its leader Saudi Arabia continues to spray the market with its ‘whatever it takes’ promises, now major…

Chris Whalen: “Glad I Am On A George Soros-Funded Blacklist Of Journalists”

October 30, 2017 Tyler Durden 0

At the end of his note today (via TheInstitutionalRiskAnalyst.com), Chris Whalen dropped the following bombshell…

Finally, we cannot fail to mention that The IRA’s Chris Whalen has been included in the list of enemies compiled by the minions of George Soros.

We are in decidedly good company.  David Ignatius. Ann Coulter. The editor of The Nation. The “tout US journalism.”

Apparently everybody who is anybody in the world of media has earned the enmity of Mr. Soros, the architect of the Ukraine disaster and one of the world’s great war mongers

We bask in his scorn.

For anyone that knows Chris, this is certainly a shock to discover he is so subversive. In a tweet slamming the “authoritarian tilt of warmongers like Soros,” Whalen links to an excellent discussion by Renegade’s Claire Connellyand why black lists matter…

Connelly begins…

There’s a scene in Aaron Sorkin’s critically acclaimed political drama, The West Wing, where President Bartlet, (played by Martin Sheen) is in an argument with his communications director, Toby Ziegler, (played by Richard Schiff) over a speech he has to write condemning Hollywood for its gratuitous use of sex and violence in entertainment:

“…If I were an actor or a writer or uh, uh, uh, a producer in Hollywood and someone were to start coming at me with lists of things that were American and un-American I’d start to think that this was sounding eerily familiar.”

Bartlett replies: “Do I look like Joe McCarthy to you?”, to which Ziegler responds: “Nobody ever looks like Joe McCarthy, Mr President. How do you think they get in the door in the first place?”

Well, I’m afraid to say, Democracy 2.0 is having its own, new, modern-day McCarthy moment.

Some very disturbing things happened this week which I have been trying to high-road by ignoring and getting on with the job, but this has really stuck in my craw:

About a week ago, gazillionaire, George Soros, became a modern-day McCarthyist by publishing a report and accompanying excel document via European think tank “European Values” (which he funds, incidentally), listing hundreds of writers, journalists, celebrities, authors, academics, experts and ‘miscellaneous persons’ that have ever appeared on the Russia’s public broadcaster, Russia Today, tarring them as ‘useful idiots undermining Western democracy’.

RT is often accused of acting as a propaganda mouthpiece for Putin and his ‘lackeys’. More on this shortly.

The report lists 2327 US and UK politicians, political figures, diplomats and military leaders that have appeared on the the channel including Ron Paul, Bernie Sanders, Jill Stein, Ralph Nader, former Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, Lawrence Wilkinson, US Representative and Deputy Chair of the DNC, Keith Ellison and US National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn.

British figures named include former Mayor of London, Ken Livingston, British MP, Vince Cable, former Deputy Labour Prime Minister John Prescott, former UKIP leader, Nigel Farage and Leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn.

The many, many, names ‘gracing’ Soros’ excel spreadsheet include my colleague and mentor, economist Professor Steven Keen, Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, economist Professor Michael Hudson and feminist author and intellectual, Germaine Greer. Celebrities on the blacklist include SNL stars Fred Armison, Bill Hader and Alec Baldwin, Seinfeld star, Jason Alexander, and actresses Patricia Arquette and Christina Ricci. Fox News host Ann Coulter, journalist Seymour Hersh and MIT linguist Professor Noam Chomsky are also named, (at least I think he is named. Whoever compiled the document spelled his name wrong and referred to him as ‘Noah Chomsky’. I’m guessing it was some junior employ that helped build out the list because no seasoned researcher would misspell Chomsky’s name!). It even lists Virgin CEO, Richard Branson and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, along with tv show host, Piers Morgan. Even the Dalai Lama rates a mention. Download the full list for yourself here.

The blacklist is designed to discourage advertisers from doing business with RT, discourage broadcasters from hiring anyone that has ever appeared on the channel, and create an environment that discourages anyone and everyone from putting their careers at risk by associating themselves with the network.

This is textbook McCarthyism.

As Caitlin Johnstone explained

The plutocrats who own the media make alliances with the plutocrats who own the government, and the intelligence agencies which serve this establishment power structure actively infiltrate media outlets on all levels.

Which of course makes the current crusade against Russian state media ridiculous.

Your true rulers do not oppose RT and Sputnik because they want to protect you from propaganda and psy-ops, they oppose RT and Sputnik because they gum up the gears of the propaganda and psy-ops you’re meant to be consuming.

The only thing holding the omnicidal power structure in place is its propaganda machine, and as AI gets more advanced the manipulations of corporate propaganda and corporate censorship are only going to get more difficult to deal with. All it will take to overthrow the ruling elites who are choking our species to death is for us to kill the establishment propaganda machine and/or become much more difficult to propagandize.

The Return Of Deepwater Oil

October 30, 2017 Nick Cunningham 0

In a historic auction for deepwater oil assets in Brazil, the oil majors showed up on October 27 and bought several offshore blocks, indicating a high level of interest in the country after a major policy overhaul allowed private investment. Royal Dutch Shell won half of the blocks that were offered, and Shell was already one of Brazil’s largest foreign investors. After purchasing BG Group for around $50 billion, Shell took a large presence in Brazil. The logic behind Shell’s strategy is that the company argues it can breakeven with…

New Weinstein Company Film Grosses Just $742 During One-Day Theatrical Release

October 30, 2017 Tyler Durden 0

Weinstein Co’s panicked assurances that the firm is in good financial health aside, evidence of the financial fallout from the Harvey Weinstein scandal is finally beginning to emerge. And as it turns out, being exposed for tacitly condoning the behavior of an alleged sexual predator is really, really rough on the bottom line.

To wit, the Weinstein Co.’s first movie to be released since more than 50 women came forward to accuse former studio head Harvey Weinstein of sex crimes ranging from harassment to groping to assault grossed less than $800 during a one-day theatrical release, according to Variety.

While we don’t have the data handy, that’s got to be some kind of record – even when factoring in that it was a limited release. Making matters worse, the movie featured an all-star cast including Bella Thorne (who played the protagonist) and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Here’s Variety:

The Weinstein Company’s “Amityville: The Awakening” grossed a minuscule $742 total at 10 locations on Saturday, two weeks after the haunted house sequel began streaming for free on Google Play.

Bella Thorne, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jennifer Morrison, and Cameron Monaghan star in “Amityville: The Awakening,” which was directed by Franck Khalfoun from his own script. It’s produced by TWC’s Dimension and Blumhouse.

The original 1979 movie “The Amityville Horror” is based on the 1974 events at a rural house in Amityville, N.Y., which became the site of one of the deadliest hauntings and grisliest murders in American history when Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot all six members of his family. Jay Anson’s book “The Amityville Horror” detailed a family moving into the house in 1975 and leaving a week later due to paranormal activity.

The showing looks particularly paltry considering the 2005 remake of the original Amityville Horror  earned $108 million worldwide. In “Amityville: The Awakening,” Thorne’s teenage character’s family moves into the house unaware of its haunted past.

The Weinstein Co. had planned to release the movie several times since last year before scrubbing the release date. It announced on Sept. 21 — two weeks before the massive Harvey Weinstein scandal broke — that “Amityville: The Awakening” would be available for free exclusively on Google Play from Oct. 12 to Nov. 8 and have a limited one-day theatrical release on Oct. 28, Variety reported.

Here’s a suspenseful clip from the film featuring Thorne’s character:

Harvey Weinstein is presently the subject of no fewer than four criminal probes being conducted by the FBI, NYPD, LAPD and Scotland Yard. He recently completed a two-week stint in a $2,000-a-night Arizona rehab facility.

The firm was reportedly in talks to sell most of its major assets to Colony Capital, which is run by Trump friend and adviser Thomas Barrick Jr. Colony supplied an emergency cash infusion to the firm shortly after the New York Times published its original story exposing Weinstein’s history of harassing and assasulting women and covering his tracks with settlements and NDAs.

Puerto Rico Scraps $300M Power Grid Deal With Whitefish Energy

October 30, 2017 Tsvetana Paraskova 0

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) will cancel a US$300-million deal with Montana-based Whitefish Energy for restoring the power after Hurricane Maria hit the island, following criticism over the way the tiny Montana firm obtained the contract. The deal has been criticized by Puerto Rican officials and U.S. federal authorities after details emerged that the terms of the deal had not been obtained through competitive public bidding. Puerto Rico’s Governor, Ricardo Rosselló, asked on Sunday the electricity authority to…

Prostitution, Free Speech, and a Veteran Memorial: 3 Interesting Court Cases

October 30, 2017 TDB 0

Via The Daily Bell

Let’s Not Pick and Choose Our Freedoms

Prostitution has been illegal in California for 145 years. But for the first time, judges appear to be considering overturning the law.

In the past, challenges to the law have been outright dismissed. But now judges have agreed to take a closer look at the California law.

“Why should it be illegal to sell something that it’s legal to give away?” A judge asked in court.

And he has a point. We shouldn’t limit other people’s freedom, no matter how distasteful it seems. It may offend you. But that is no reason to stop other people from doing what they want.

And while many would seek to equate prostitution to human trafficking, these are two separate issues. In fact, it may be easier to focus on human trafficking if prostitution were legal. Resources which currently waste time picking up the same prostitutes and cycling them through the courts could be redirected to catching actual traffickers.

And legal prostitutes in the industry could then shed light on illicit activities involving trafficking if they didn’t have to fear being prosecuted for prostitution itself.

Police Can Arrest You for Anything They Want in St. Louis

An ordinance in St. Louis is aimed at giving police broad powers to arrest protestors. City officials are arguing in court that the town law is not a violation of free speech.

The ordinance states that police officers can arrest people for interfering with or obstructing officers “in any manner.”

The case stems from protests in 2015 over police killings. The ordinance was challenged but upheld, and that decision is now being appealed.

The code is vague and overly broad. It allows police to construe some reason to arrest almost anyone they come into contact with. The police arrested people for standing or walking in the road after being told not to.

The ordinance even allows police to arrest anyone who even talks to them while making an arrest.

Police already have too much power to arrest people. This law is clearly contrary to free speech and limits the right to protest and speak your mind.

Some people might think it is rude, but basic acts of protest, or even yelling at police, is protected free speech. If we want to keep our rights, we have to respect those ones that annoy us.

WWI Memorial Cross Must be Taken Down, Court Rules

A 92-year-old monument in Maryland to WWI veterans has been ruled unconstitutional. A three-judge panel in the U.S. court of appeals made the ruling because the memorial is in the shape of a cross. They say it must be taken down.

The group that sued says it is discriminatory against other religions and violates the separation of church and state.

But what the constitution actually says is that Congress shall make no law establishing a religion, or preventing the free exercise thereof.

Does a memorial in the shape of a religious symbol really constitute establishing a religion? How is that preventing anyone from exercising their own religion?

This is just another case of whiny people making an issue out of nothing. It’s a World War One memorial. If you don’t want to make future memorials in the shape of religious symbols, fine. But who is wasting their time trying to get an almost 100-year-old monument torn down?

Some people have too much time on their hands and are just looking for things to be offended about.

US Special Forces Capture Militant Who Was Instrumental In 2012 Benghazi Attack

October 30, 2017 Tyler Durden 0

For all the talk about Paul Manafort’s indictiment, one can’t help but feel that there is a distinct undercurrent amid today’s newsflow focusing on Hillary Clinton: from the resignation of one of the most powerful Democrats, Tony Podesta, who earlier today parted ways with the lobbying firm he founded after it became ensnared in the Mueller probe (and who is also brother of Clinton campaign chair John Podesta) to the sudden reemergence of the Benghazi attack narrative, one wonders if Trump is not preparing to launch a broadside attack on his former presidential challenger.

Lost in the general newsflow, on Monday the AP reported that US special ops forces captured a militant Sunday who was the US says was instrumental in the 2012 attack on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.  The September 2012 assault killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, and led to allegations that then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton failed to provide an adequate response to the attack, and subsequently blamed the attack on a Youtube video clip.

US officials say the mission was approved by President Donald Trump and done in coordination with Libya’s internationally recognized government. US official have since identified the suspect as Mustafa al-Imam, and added that American special ops forces captured al-Imam in Misrata, on the north coast of Libya. The official says al-Imam was then taken to a U.S. Navy ship at the Misrata port for transport. He is being taken now to the United States.

The White House is expected to release more details shortly.

As Fox News adds, earlier this month, the trial of Ahmed Abu Khattala began, the alleged mastermind of the 2012 attacks.  It’s not clear if the suspect detailed by US special operations forces is one of Khattala’s lieutenants.  Khatallah had been awaiting trail since 2014, when US Army commandos and FBI agents captured him in Benghazi and put him on a Navy ship for detention in an American prison inside the United States.

Late on Monday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the U.S. will “spare no effort to ensure that justice is served” to the militants who committed the 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.

Tillerson thanked military, law enforcement and intelligence officials for the capture of a man they’re describing as a key suspect in the deadly assault on the U.S. outpost. Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, and three other Americans were killed. Tillerson also said he spoke with some family members of the four fallen Americans to “underscore the U.S. government’s unwavering support.”

His full statement below:

And now that the Benghazi narrative is back in the news, how long before Trump decides to casually tweet about it, while casually invoking Hillary’s name in the process?
